ALL CITY BOOK READ ANNOUNCEMENT
Did you know that Saturday, May 17, 2014, is the 60thAnniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision, Brown v. Board of Education? Topeka Public Schools, Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site, Washburn University, City of Topeka, Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and Shawnee County, will be remembering this event throughout the year with multiple events.
One of the events planned, is an All City Book Read, co-sponsored by the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and Topeka Public Schools. The book selected is Courageous Conversations about Race by Glenn Singleton and Curtis Linton. This book provides interested people with communication protocols to use in discussing racial issues. The book discussions will be facilitated by members of the Topeka Public Schools Equity Council and building and district leaders.
Both the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and Topeka Public Schools (Burnett Center @ 624 SW 24th Street) have books available for checkout. We are asking that the first assignment be read before the first meeting.
The dates/times/locations for the All City Book Read will be:
· Monday, April 21, 2014 – Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library (5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.) – Chapters 1 – 4
· Monday, April 28, 2014 – Topeka High School Cafeteria (5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.) – Chapters 5 – 10
· Monday, May 5, 2014 – Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site Museum (5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.) – Chapters 11 - 13
